When I recorded An Inner Cosmos, (background music for the Fusion recordings), I was interfacing with an electronic recording program that had a very linear approach when it came to time. The challenge came in producing a non-linear musical landscape within this linear framework. I Ching showed me the way.
The tracks on this recording are inspired by trigrams from the I Ching. I used the trigrams as models for triggering various sounds and movements. For example, Wooden Dragon is based on the trigram Wood, where a Yang line is below two Yin lines. Within the structure of the musical composition there are Yang, then Yin, then Yin triggers for the sounds. Each composition is inspired by the magic of its Element.
A non-linear composition allows the listener to experience more ethereal thought. Through specific musical intention, I chose not to add a pulse or rhythm to the compositions (Except for Wood). This allows the music to communicate, stimulate and articulate multi-dimensional landscapes. I have found this to be a mind-opening stimulus. I hope this is true for you as well.
